The Craft

Directed by: Andrew Fleming

Memorable quotes:

Chris Hooker: "Hi!
Sarah Bailey: Hi!
Chris: You're Sarah, right?
Sarah: Yeah.
Chris: I'm Chris. I just wanted to apologize for those guys in french. They're assholes.
Sarah: You know what they say: you are who you hang out with.
Chris: Yeah, right. Wait, did you just call me an asshole? You did, didn't you?"

Chris: Oh shit, it's the bitches from Eastwick.

Rochelle: Nancy is sorry about what happened in biology, and she's mean to everybody, so don't take it personally.

Nancy: "What's up with that?
Sarah: I slit my wrists.
Nancy: Sorry.
Bonnie: What did you do it with?
Sarah: With a kitchen knife.
Bonnie: You even did it the right way."

Bus driver: "Gotta watch out for those weirdos.
Nancy: We are the weirdos."

Rochelle: I ask for the ability to not hate those who hate me, especially for that racist pieces of blond shit like Laura Lizzie.

Sarah: "Now you have to imagine that she's incerdibly light, like she's made of air.
Bonnie: Now, is that her whole body or just hear head?
Rochelle: Cow!"

Chris: "Sarah!
Sarah: Oh, no, no.
Chris: Why didn't you answer the phone?
Sarah: It's three o'clock in the morning Chris.
Chris: Oh yeah, that's a good reason."

Mr Bailey: "Can I help you?
Chris: Nobody can."

Lirio: True magic is neither black nor white. It's both because nature is both. Loving and cruel at the same time. The only good or bad is in the heart of the witch. Life keeps a balance of its own.

Chris: "Yeah, I know exactly what you mean.
Sarah: You do?
Chris: Yeah, you know sometimes it's like we're one person, you know what I mean?
Sarah: No, I'm not sure.
Chris: I'm not sure either. It's so funny. I was just thinking: I have no idea what I'm talking about."

Sarah: I bind you from doing harm Nancy, harm against other people and harm against yourself.

Nancy: God, if I was as pathetic as you are, I would have killed myself ages ago. You should get on with it.

Nancy: "What's going on? Why aren't you dead?
Sarah: He came to me, saved me. Oh and he wanted me to give you a message: you're in deep shit. He says you've abused what he has given you and now you're gonna have to pay the price."

Sarah: Relax, it's only magic. Now who is pathetic?

Sarah: Hold your breath until I call.

Plot:
A young teenage girl who seems to have a particular link with magic arrives in a catholic high school where she is befriended by three strange girls, who are into witchcraft.

Review:

The Craft has a special meaning for me. It is the very first "horror" movie I've ever watched, and I got to thanks my big sister for showing it me, especially when I wasn’t even supposed to.  Even as a child, I found this movie amazing and I was truly impressed and scared by it. Fairuza Balk, who plays the dangerous and crazy Nancy particularly scared me, and you got no difficulty believing she was completely insane, for she plays it so well! I also particularly like the fact that Nancy’s family name is “Downs”. I think it might have been a hint since she likes to bring everyone down, thus implying she is not one to be trusted. I thought it was a pretty good clue as to how she was going to turn out.
Now, I have to admit that I’ve always been interested in witchcraft and witches, so this movie was naturally appealing to me. Everything was reunited for me to like it. The cast was great, it contained magic, it was scary… how could have I ever disliked it?
Even when I watch it now, I still love it. I love how Fairuza Balk and Robin Tunney’s characters, are subtly opposed throughout the movie, even when they are meant to be friends. One of the most striking examples is the photo that Robin’s character, Sarah, cut off. Neve and Rachel’s characters are looking straight at the camera, while Nancy can be seen glancing to her left and Sarah is glancing to her right: that is to say that they are both looking in different directions, which foreshadows what is going to happen. They are too different to get along, and there is no way they can see eye to eye.
I must say that seeing how well Robin Tunney portrayed Sarah, I’m not surprised that, years later, she’s still on the movie industry. Since The Craft she’s notably worked in the hit tv show Prison Break, and she went on with the very popular tv show The Mentalist. I’m glad she’s still around, for she’s an amazing actress.
Unsurprisingly, Neve Campbell has a fairly good career and she’s so great and gorgeous in The Craft. I believe this is the first time I ever saw her on TV, and little did I know it was far from being the last time. I was a huge fan of her in Party of Five, and she’s in another one of my favorite movie, which is the famous Wild Things. Furthermore, she’s of course known for her role in the Scream series and I can only hope we’ll see a lot more of her in the future.
I was also surprised that Andrew Fleming , who directed The Craft, is also the one who directed Dick, starring Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams, which is another one of my all time favourite movie.
When The Craft came out, I also don’t think that the tv show Charmed was even in production, so it’s only years later that it came to my attention that Charmed was actually inspired by The Craft, even going as far as using its theme song “How soon is now?”  Ironically enough, Holly Marie Combs, who was one of the stars of Charmed, turned down a role in The Craft, yet got famous by playing in a TV show that was based on it.
On another note, I like how witchcraft was introduced in The Craft, making it clear that it isn’t something that is good or bad. It can nevertheless by used to harm people by someone who is heartless and has bad intentions. I thought it was a smart way to put it, especially as this applies to many things in our life.
Basically, I love this film and I’d definitely recommend it to everyone. I’d say that if witchcraft is a theme that interests you, and if you also want to be scared a bit, then The Craft is for you!
