Directed by: Francis Lawrence
Hunger Games' memorable quotes:
Katniss: Everdeen: Finnick...
Finnick: I wanted to go back for Peeta and Johanna. But I couldn't move. They have Annie too. They took her. She's...She's in the capitol. I wish she was dead. I wish they were all dead and we were too.
Katniss: I was always told there was nothing left of Thirteen.
Boggs: The war never stopped for us.
Plutarch Heavensbee: There she is. Our girl on fire. Madam President may I present you with the Mockingjay.
Alma Coin: What an honor it is to meet you. You're a courageous young woman. I know how disoriented this must be and I can't imagine what it's like to live through the atrocities of these games.
Alma Coin: Are you aware of what's happened? When you fired your arrow in the force field, you electrified the nation. There have been riots and uprising and strikes in seven districts. We believe that if we keep this energy going we can unify the districts against the capitol. But if we don't, if we let it dissipate, we could be waiting another seventy five years for this opportunity. Everyone in 13 is ready for this.
Katniss: What about Peeta? Is he alive?
Plutarch: I don't know. And I wish I did.
Katniss: You left him there. You left Peeta in that arena to die.
Plutarch: Katniss...there is so many...
Katniss: Peeta was the one who was supposed to live!
Alma Coin: Miss Everdeen, this revolution is about everyone. It's about all of us and we need a voice.
Katniss: Then you should have saved Peeta.
Alma Coin: Maybe you should have rescued the boy instead.
Plutarch Heavensbee: Oh no. Listen to me: No one else can do this but her.
Alma Coin: This is not the girl you described.
Plutarch Heavensbee: Let her see what the capitol did to 12.
Alma Coin: She can't handle it. The games destroyed her.
Plutarch: This is the only choice she has. People don't always show up the way you want them Madam President. But that anger, that anger during defiance, that's what we want and we can redirect it. We need to unite these people out there that were doing nothing but killing each other in the arena for years. We have to have a lightning rod. They'll follow her. She is the face if the revolution. Let her see it. Let her go home.
Alma Coin: Send her.
President Snow: Each district supplies the capitol like blood to a heart. In return, the capitol provides order and security. To refuse work is to put the entire system in danger. The capitol is the beating heart of Panem. Nothing can survive without a heart.
President Snow: All images of the Mockingjay are now forbidden. Possessing them will be considred treason. Punishable by death. Justice shall be served. Order shall be restored. Those who ignore the warnings of history...prepare to pay the ultimate price.
Peeta Mellark: First off, you have to understand that when you're in the game, you only get one wish. It's very costly.
Caesar Flickerman: It costs your life.
Peeta: I think it costs more than life.
Caesar: How do you mean, more than your life?
Peeta: I mean, to murder innocent people. That costs everything that you are.
Caesar: Yes.
So you, you hold onto that wish and that night my wish was to save Katniss. I should have run off with her earlier in the day like she wanted to/
Caesar: You didn't.
Peeta: No.
Caesar: Why? Were you caught up in Beetee's plan?
Peeta: No. I was caught up trying to play allies. And they separated us. That's why I lost her. And then lightning hit and the whole forcefield around the arena blew out.
Caesar: Yes but Peeta, Katniss is the one who blew it, no? You saw the footage.
Peeta: She didn't know what she was doing. Neither of us knew there was a bigger plan going on. We had no idea.
Caesar: You had no idea?
Peeta: No.
Caesar: Well Peeta, there are many who find this suspicious to say the least. It seems as though she was part of a rebel plan.
Peeta: What, do you think it was part of her rebel plan to be almost killed by Johanna? Or part of the plan to be paralysed by lightning? No, we were not part of any rebel plan. We had no idea what was going on.
Caesar: Alright, I believe you Peeta Mellark. Thank you.
Peeta: Yeah.
Caesar: I was going to ask you to speak about the unrest but I think you might be too upset.
Peeta: No, no, I can...
Caesar: Are you sure?
Peeta: Yes, absolutely.
Caesar: Thank you.
Peeta: I want everyone who is watching this to stop and to think about what a civil war could mean. We almost went extinct once before and now our numbers are even fewer. Is that really what we want to do? Kill ourselves off? Killing is not the answer.
Caesar Flickerman: Are you calling for a ceasefire?
Peeta Mellark: Yes, I am.
Katniss: No one hates the capitol more than me. And I wanna help. I just keep thinking... even if we win this war, what happens to Peeta? I mean, I know he is not safe there but he is definitely not safe here.
Primrose Everdeen: I don't think you realize how important you are to them. If you want something, you just have to ask. You could demand almost anything, they'd have to agree.
Katniss: I should wake you up more often little duck.
Katniss: Thank you for agreeing to meet with me. I have decided I'll be Mockingjay, But I have some conditions. Peeta and the other tributes Johanna Mason and Annie Cresta will be rescued at the earliest opportunity. If and when Peeta is liberated he will receive a full and unconditional pardon. No punishment will be inflected and the same goes for the other tributes.
Alma Coin: No.
Katniss: It's not their fault you abandoned them in the arena. They're doing and saying what they can to survive.
Alma Coin: Individuals don't make demands in 13. There will be a tribunal and a fair judgement. Thank you.
Katniss: The victors will be granted immunity and you will announce that in front of the entire population of 13. You will hold yourself and your government responsible or you'll find another Mockingjay.
Plutarch Heavensbee: That's it. That's her. Right there. Isn't that what I promised you? When she wears the costume, gun fires in the background, smoke...our mockingjay. Madam President we're losing ground because people are losing heart. This is worth the risk. She is worth the risk.
Alma Coin: Do you have any other conditions?
Katniss: My sister gets to keep her cat.
Plutarch: Anyone can be replaced.
Plutarch: May I speak freely?
Alma Coin: You don't appear to do anything else.
Katniss: Effie, what are you doing here?
Effie Trinket: Political refugee.
Katniss: Plutarch rescued you?
Effie: Rescued, is that how he calls it?
Effie Trinket: You know everything else can be made new again, like democracy.
Effie: Everyone's either gonna want to kill you, kiss you, or be you.
Haymitch Abernathy: That my friends is how a revolution dies. Hello Katniss, is that how you greet an old friend?
Katniss: Maybe I don't recognize you sober.
Haymitch: I guess it looks as bad as it feels.
Haymitch: You know I like you better Effie without all that make up.
Effie: I like you better sober.
Haymitch: What do all these have in common?
Gale Hawthorne: No one told her what do do.
Beetee: Unscripted yes. So maybe you should all leave her alone.
Haymitch: You want a symbol for the revolution? She cannot be coached into it. Trust me, I know.
Katniss: I wanna go.
Alma Coin: And if you're killed?
Katniss: Make sure you get it on camera.
Cressida: We all fled on our own. For this. For you.
Katniss: Don't film me in there. I can't help them.
Cressida: Just let them see your face.
District 8 patient #1: Katniss Everdeen?! What are you doing here?
Katniss: I came to see you.
District 8 patient #2: What about the baby?
Katniss: I lost it.
District 8 patient #3: You fight Katniss? You're here to fight with us?
Katniss: I am. I will.
Cressida: Katniss...Katniss... can you tell everyone what you're seeing right now? Katniss, what do you want to say?
Katniss: I want the rebels to know that I'm alive, that I'm in district 8 where the capital just bombed an hospital filled with unarmed men, women, and children and there will be no survivors. If you think for a second that the capital will ever treat us fairly, you are lying to yourselves because we know who they are and what they do. (Katniss points at the hospital in flames) This is what they do and we must fight back. I have a message for president snow. You can torture us and bomb us and burn our districts to the ground but do you see that? Fire is catching. And if we burn, you burn with us.
Alma Coin: Plutarch's faith in you wasn't misplaced.
Katniss: Thank you.
Alma Coin: There is no progress without compromise. No victory without sacrifice. But I stand here with the mockingjay to announce that our moment has arrived.
Alma Coin: Together we will become an alliance to be reckon with.
Finnick Odair: The more people on our side the closer we are to Peeta and Annie.
Caesar Flickerman: You must love her very much to be able to forgive her. I don't think that I could. Unless of course Peeta you think that perhaps she is being forced into saying things that she doesn't understand?
Peeta: Don't be a fool Katniss. I know you never wanted the rebellion. The things you did in the games were never intended to start all of this. The rebels have made you into something that you're not. Something that could destroy all of us. So if you have any power or any say on what they do or how they use you, please, please urge them to stop this war before it's too late. And ask yourself: Can you trust the people you're working with? Do you know what you really want?
Katniss: That is the same Peeta that defended you at the whipping pole.
Gale: No, it's not. Now he's defending himself.
Katniss: When did "we" become you and Coin?
Cressida: You have saved so many people Gale. Without you they'd be no district 12, not even the memory of it.
Gale: This is where you kissed me.
Katniss: I didn't think you remembered that.
Gale: I'd have to be dead to forget that.
Katniss: You went back for the cat? What where you thinking?
Prim: I wasn't gonna leave him behind, I couldn't leave with myself.
Katniss: Snow is using Annie to punish you. He's taunting us with them. I didn't understand until now watching that stupid cat.
Finnick: After your first game I thought the whole romance was an act. We all expected you to continue that strategy but it wasn't until Peeta's heart stopped and he nearly died that I knew I misjudged you. You love him. I'm not saying in what way, maybe you don't even know yourself. Anyone paying attention can see it.
Katniss: I can't be the mockingjay.
Haymitch Abernathy: You're not the mocking, just Katniss.
Katniss: I never asked for this. I never asked to be in the games. I never asked to be the mockingjay. I just wanted to save my sister. And then keep Peeta alive.
President Snow: Miss Everdeen, you couldn't run from this any more than you could have run from the games.
President Snow: Miss Everdeen, it's the things we love most that destroy us.
Haymitch: They turned him into a weapon Katniss. To kill you.
President Alma Coin: Today we freed the victors. Tomorrow: Panem!
Plot: Time has passed since Katniss threw her arrow into the forcefield, causing everything to explode and causing an uproar throughout the district. Now in district 13, Katniss must decide whether or not to embrace being the mockingjay, even if this means putting Peeta's life at risk.
The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 Official trailer:
Review:
Out of all The Hunger Games series, the final book of The Hunger Games novels is probably
the darkest one. While Mockingjay doesn’t
take place in an arena like the others did, it is an action packed, character
driven novel that ends the series after much tribulation. So I was a little
bit surprised when I first heard that the movie adaptation would be divided in
two parts. While I of course understand that means more money for the studio, I
do believe it was still a risky endeavour and I’m afraid my fear has been
confirmed. I found myself bored at times
and I was ended up feeling very disappointed. Nothing really happens throughout the movie and
this is obvious that this was a filler movie warming up for the very last part
that is coming up. While The Hunger Games cast is as usual very good, this time
I was kind of tired of their acting in a sense where nothing surprised me at
all. Now, I did read the books before so of course I know what is to happen in
the movies, but still I found the acting to be overdone at times and not as
convincing as in the other sequels.
I will
still admit that the physical transformation of Johanna Mason, Peeta Mellark
and of Natalie Dormer who we know best as a very feminine character in Game of
Thrones was very impressive. Yet I simply failed to be convinced by the acting
or maybe I got used to it, who knows.
On another
note while Julianne Moore is one of my favorite actresses, I am highly sceptical of the casting decision to have her play President Alma Coin. I
deeply disliked that character in the book, yet Julianne Moore made her very
likeable at this point, which might have been a strategy to surprise the
viewers in Part 2 but I think it will still be hard for me to completely hate
her like I did in Suzanne Collins’ last book.
In sum, The
Hunger Games Mockingjay: Part 1 was a let down (apart from the soundtrack that is) so let’s hope Part 2 will be
much better as it would be a shame to end the movies on such a bad note.
Check out a few songs from the Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 BO!
