John Tucker Must Die

Directed by: Betty Thomas

Memorable quotes:

Kate: I was in 7th grade when I realized I was invisible.

Justin: I made these for you. Be careful, you're hot. I mean they're hot. So hot!

Beth: Let's go John, kill the bobcats! Not the real bobcats , I mean they're in danger.

Kate: Okay, I'm not passing judgement, but for whatever reason, being a vegan teen activist is usually code for easy.

Kate: This guy is cheating on all of you and instead of taking it out on him you're beating the shit out of each other?

Kate: "So, where is everybody? Detention?
Scott: You came early to detention?
Kate: Oh erm, well it's, you know, I'd hate to miss a minute of being detained."

Kate: Jerk isn't really my type.

Scott: "I'll let you know a secret though. My mum says I'm special on the inside.
Kate: Good for you!"

Heather: "John and I belong together. He is the team captain and I am head cheerleader.
Beth: I'm sorry, what kind of cheerleader?"

Kate: "Okay, let me guess: does he always use pet names like baby and sweetheart? Yeah, it's not out of affection, it's so he doesn't mix up your names. And he's all about an unspoken bond or something special but never about a relationship. And the whole arrangement was your idea so you feel guilty that he cheated.
Heather: Oh my god, you're dating him too?!"

Kate: So you're dating a dog nurse.

Beth: Normally I'm opposed to the slaughter of animals, but in John Tucker's case I'll make an exception.

Heather: "You're spending way too much time in extra school programs.
Carrie: Thank you!"

Kate: And since John's game is that he always have a date, to get even with a guy like that you make him undateable.

Carrie: That shallow bastard think I'm not complex?

Heather: The most important thing a cheerleader wears is her attitude.

Heather: Great, make a video, maybe John will get a role in the O.C.!

Beth: "Okay, I'm gonna be John. Heather, be Kate.
Heather: I don't want to be Kate, you be Kate.
Kate: Can I be Kate?
Carrie: Fine, let Kate be Kate, just go!"

John: "What's wrong?
Kate: Nothing, nothing, I was just breathing and I breathe a lot.
John: Right."

Carrie: "Beth is still in the truck.
Heather: What?
Carrie: Slut in truck, come on we gotta move."

Lori: "Kate, just be careful who you pretend to be. I mean, I'd hate if you forgot who you are.
Kate: I was nobody, so there is really no risk of loosing anything."

Kate: I wish it could just be simple, like a retro pop song: I want you to want me. Boom, end of story. They all lived happily ever after.

Kate:" I guess I was invisible for so long that it felt good to be noticed.
Lori: Kate, You chose to be invisible, you thought it would be easier that way.
Kate: Well, they're noticing me now. I mean, none of this is really me. And now I don't even know who my real friends really are.
Lori: Maybe if you showed them the real Kate, you'd find out."

Plot:
John Tucker is the most popular boy in high school, and a serial dater. When three of the girls he was dating at the same time suddenly find out the whole truth, they decide it's payback time, and payback is a bitch.

Review:

John Tucker Must Die is your typical teen flick. Nothing more, nothing less. You have the new girl that can't fit in but will gain popularity because she's nice and pure, high school is unfair, the different cliques don't get along until they see they're not that different, and a girl falls out with a boy. End of story.
Don't get me wrong though. Although this was predictable and quite similar to a lot of teen flick, it is still a nice movie to watch if you just want to have a good time, without having to reflect too much on what you're watching. The soundtrack is also awesome and it really helps build the right atmosphere.
The acting is rather unequal though. Jesse Metcalfe isn't really a natural. His acting isn't exactly the best and he played John exactly like he played the gardener in Desperate Housewives. This makes you wonder whether he is even capable of playing something different.
Sophia Bush disappointed me a lot. I thought her acting was rather average, when I've seen her play so well in One Tree Hill. I expected a lot more from her.
Now, on a brightest note, Brittany Snow is really good. I've first seen her in the TV show American Dreams and I've been a fan ever since. She's a great actress and I wish she could do more movies. I've seen her in some very unusual and original roles, and I'm convinced she got lots of talent.
I was also glad to see Penn Badgley in a role other than Dan in Gossip Girl. It's funny to see how much this role and the one he had years later in Easy A are similar though. Like Jesse Metcalfe, I'd like to see him play a role that's quite different from what he usually does. It would be nice for a change.
Apart from that, I still enjoyed seeing all those very different girls help each other and discover that they can actually get along. This is something quite typical of teen flicks, but I still enjoy watching this.  Now, I don't know what I think about the morality of the story though. I mean, John does understand that lying isn't fair and honest, but he doesn't change. Yet I hope people will get something out of this movie, such as the importance of being true to yourself and that it takes courage to be yourself around others. No matter what age you are, it shows that it is necessary to show who you really are, especially since this is the only way you can develop genuine relationships with other people.
