The Good Dinosaur

Directed by: Peter Sohn

Memorable quotes:

-Momma: "You're a Poppa.
-Poppa: You're a Momma."

-Poppa: "The river is not something to mess around with Arlo. Be careful."

-Poppa: "Yesterday you said that footless friend was the worse.
-Arlo: He's only got ONE foot.
-Poppa: You dont have to like them Arlo. You just have to feed them."

-Momma: "Did you just put your mark higher than mine?
-Poppa: What? No! It's just the angle you're looking at.
-Momma: The angle, huh?"

-Poppa: "You gotta earn your mark by doing something big for something bigger than yourself. Someday you'll have make your own mark and I can't wait to see it."

-Poppa: "Sometimes you gotta go over your fear or you won't survive out there."

- Arlo: "Don't worry Momma, I won't let us starve.
- Momma; You're a good son."

- Arlo: "Get over here! Get over here! (Spot approaches) Get away! Get away!"

- Arlo: " I am still gonna steal the life out of you. But before I do, can you find me some more? Will you take me to the berries?"

- Forrest Woodbush: "Hello.
- Arlo: Hello?
- Forrest Woodbush: We've been watching you. We thought you were going to die. But then you didn't. That creature protected you. Why?
- Arlo: I don't know."

-Forest Woodbush: "This is Fiery. He protects me from the creatures that crawl over night. This is Destructor. She protects me from mosquitoes. This is Dream crusher. He protects me from having unrealistic goals. And this is Debby."

- Forest Woodbush: " What is his name?
- Arlo: A name? I don't know.
- Forest Woodbush: Hmm then I will meditate on this. Hmm I name him I keep him! Hmm Killer! Hmmm Beast! Hmm Murderer!
- Arlo: Robby!
- Forest Woodbush:  Funeral planner!
- Arlo: Cody!
- Forest Woodbush: Hemorrhoid!
- Arlo: Score!
- Forest Woodbush; Frank!
- Arlo: Stinky!
- Forest Woodbush: The maniac!
- Arlo: Funky!
- Forest Woodbush: Violet.
- Arlo: Spike!
- Forest Woodbush: Lunatic.
- Arlo: Spot! (At this point the human child turns around). Come here Spot, come here.
- Forest Woodbush: He is named. You clearly are connected. Good for you. On your path to clawtooth-mountain that creature will keep you safe. Don't ever lose him."

-Thunderclap: "Arlo. I used to have a name like that once. That was before I started following the storm.
-Arlo: The storm?
- Thunderclap: The storm swept me off. I was afraid for  my life but that storm gave me a relevation.
- Arlo: You mean a revelation?
- Thunderclap: No. A relevation, okay? I was at a real low point you know, and the storm swept me up to a real high point and then left me in a pile of relevation.
- Arlo: Wow.
- Thunderclap: Yeah wow. That's when the storm gave me my new name. Because, as we say...
- Downpour: The storm provides!
- Thunderclap: The storm provides. You can call me Thunderclap."

-Thunderclap: "Don't think you can mess with me. I've seen the eye of the storm and I forgot what fear is! I'm not afraid of anything."

-Butch: "Nash, get out of you sister's bubble!"

-Butch: "Hey kid, if you pull my leg, I'm gonna eat yours."

-Arlo: "Don't move? What if they have claws and big teeth?
-Butch: Don't overthink it."

- Creeper: "I'm gonna love ending you."

- Butch: "It was 100 degrees in the shade and I walked for five days with no water. Then I saw it: the pretty pond. I bent down to take a drink when these crocs launched out of the water. One croc bit me on the face. Ain't no way I wasn't their supper, expect for one thing: I wasn't ready for dying that day. I bit one croc in half, tail whipped the other, and the last one, I drowned that croc in my own blood.
- Arlo: Whoa!
- Ramsey & Nash: Dang!
- Nash: Look, look, it gives me little gooses every time!
- Ramsey: I love that story."

- Arlo: You guys would have liked my Poppa. He wasn't scared of anything. I'm done being scared.
- Butch: Who said I'm not scared?
- Arlo: But you took on a croc.
- Butch: And I was scared doing that. If you don't get scared of a croc biting you on the face, you ain't alive."

-Butch: " Listen kid. You can't get rid rid of fear. It's like mother nature. You can't beat her or outrun her. But you can get through it. You can find out what you are made off.

- Ramsey: " You hurry on back to your Momma. And don't stop for nothing!
- Arlo: Thanks, I sure appreciate it you looking out for me.
- Butch: You'll be alright. You're one tough kid."

- Arlo: " Spot needs me. I blamed him for what happened to you but it wasn't his fault. That's why I have to do help him. Because I love him.
- Poppa; I knew you had it in you. You are me. And more. No go take care of that critter."

- Thunderclap: " The storm provides."

- Arlo: "We're home Spot."

Review:

The Good Dinosaur is a beautiful journey of self-discovery that may not be very original or Pixar’s very best animation film but as our favorite dinosaur Ramsey and Nash would say: Dang, they still got it!
As usual, what I love best is not only how visually beautiful this movie is, but also how the story and script can be appreciated by both adults and children. This truly is a family movie.
Despite having its funny moments, I did shed a few tears as The Good Dinosaur deals with loss, grief, guilt, fear, but also love, friendship, acceptance and well…life.  The Good Dinosaur takes you through the story of a young dinosaur named Arlo who has issues finding his place in a frightening world but also within his own family circle, which I think makes it very easy to get drawn to the story and emphasis with Arlo since this is something most of us have or will experience throughout their life.
While Arlo's family is pretty awesome, what is probably the most touching element of the movie is the story between Arlo and his human friend, Spot.  Despite their difference, the two manage to survive incredible ordeals by looking out for one another and showing that love transgressed species.
As the T-Rex family showed us, we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover for you can find love and beauty in the most unexpected places.
The only thing that did bother me –apart from a few unanswered questions- is how little the relationship between humans and dinosaurs was explored.  We may follow the journey of a dinosaur and his human but humans and dinosaurs don’t seem to mix at all. Even when Arlo and Spot meet the caveman’s family, the humans don’t interact at all with Arlo, to a point where Arlo is nearly ignored. Spot seemed to be the link between two different worlds that through Spot collapsed, only to part ways again. I had the same issue with The Ice Age and I wished the ending was slightly different.

Do not let this deter you from watching this movie though, for this truly is a beautiful film.
