If I stay

Directed by: R.J. Cutler

Memorable quotes:

Mia Hall: At the age of 26, Ludwig von Beethoven went deaf, ending his career as a successful concert pianist. But determined not to let a little thing like his hearing end his music career, my pal Ludwig became a composer.

Mia Hall: It's like that old saying "life is what happens when you're busy making other plans."

Mia: I thought I knew where I was going. I thought I had it all mapped out. Turns out I had no idea.

Teddy: I want some!
Denny: No way dude! You don't give crack to somebody whose already on speed.

Mia: You know when you meet someone and they're already the person they were meant to be? That was Adam. Nobody outside Portland had ever heard of his band but he already was somebody. Everybody knew who he was. Me? Not so much.

Adam: You're Mia?
Mia: Yeah.
Adam: Good. I just wanted to clean that up. There are rumors. I'm Adam.
Mia: I know! Erm, hi.

Kim: There are two types of girl in this world Mia. Girls who have boyfriends in highschool...
Mia: And girls like us who wait til college.

Kim: He better be nice to you or I'll crush him like the bug he is.

Mia: I've always wondered if mum and dad were disappointed I didn't turn out to be like them. I tried to.

Mia: Dad's band  was called Nasty Bruises. Embarrassing, I know.

Kat: I love her. But I'm about ready to stab my eyesball out.
Willow: This is exactly why I could never procreate.
Willow's boyfriend: Amen sister.

Mia: I loved the order; the structure. But what really hooked me was that feeling I got in my chest. It's like my heart was breaking with the cello.

Denny: Guys play music for two reasons: to get laid our because they got rage. But mostly to get laid.
Kat: That's probably not her motivation.
Denny: No, exactly. She's not doing it to get anything. She's just doing it out of pure...
Kat: We made that.

Mia: Isn't it amazing how life is one thing and then in an instant it becomes something else? Here I am, Mia, the girl who thinks about the cello and Adam and whether a letter is waiting for me at home. And just like that...

Kat: You guys be careful out there. I hear it gets pretty wild at the symphony.

Adam: Your parents seem pretty cool.
Mia: So they tell me.

Adam: How does parents like yours end up with a kid like you.
Mia: Well I was certainly bread to be a rocker. But I have this theory that I was switched at birth.
Adam: Okay, that explains it.
Mia: No, but seriously. I don't know. I've always kinda felt like this martian in my family.

Mia: Why do I have this feeling you're about to mess up my entire life.

Adam: You finally got to meet Liz.
Mia: Yeah, you two have a lot in common. You're like hooked up or...
Adam: Actually, I'm glad you brought that up. We do have a lot in common. For instance, we're both into girls. She's with Astrid.
Mia: Oh wow, go Astrid.

Doctor: If she wants to live, she better start fighting.

Nurse Ramirez: Here is a secret baby: you control this whole thing. If you live, if you die, it's whole up to you.

Mia: I'm glad you came because you're hungry and we have food for you to eat.

Adam: Today was awesome. You guys are like a real family here. I don't think I've ever seen one of those up close. That's impressive.

Mia: Yeah well, it kinda smells like Christmas threw up in your mug.
Kim: Fine by me.

Mia: If this doesn't work out, you're gonna be there to pick up the pieces?
Kim: Every last one of them.

Kim: You better not turn into one of those girlfriends who only speak in the first person plural.

Kim: If you ever turn into one of those girls, I'm gonna shoot you.
Mia: If I ever turn into one of those girls, I'm gonna give you the gun.

Mia: Listen, you can't let Teddy grow up without a family. You gotta fight. You can do this? You have to do this.

Denny: Sometimes you make choices in life and sometimes choices make you. Does that make any sense?

Mia: Well, you get to follow your dream but I can't follow mine unless I have your permission?

Adam: Why didn't you tell me?
Mia: Maybe because I'm terrified of losing you.

Mia: When I play, I picture myself inside the cello. It's like my little house.

Mia: How am I supposed to find the strength to stay? How would it feel like to wake up an orphan?

Adam: I can't lose her again.

Nurse: I tried to do it the nice way.
Kim: Come on, you wouldn't know nice if it bit you in the ass lady.

Nurse Ramirez: Alright sweetheart, we can only carry you so far. After that, it's all you.

Mia: You're supposed to break up with someone because you're not in love with them, not because you're completely in love with them.

Kat: Either way you win. And also either way there is something that you lose.

Adam: Just please, stay. You're my home Mia. I don't care where we are, I just care we're together. I know that now. I'll do anything if you stay.

Plot: Mia is a talented musician and teenager who spends her time between her family, her best friend Kim, her boyfriend Adam, and her love for playing the cello until one event changes her life completely and she must decide whether to fight for her life or leave for good.

Review:

" Isn't it amazing how life is one thing and then in an instant it becomes something else?"

If I stay, is an okay movie: nothing very spectacular but bearable to watch. There are some nice and touching moments, but overall I was quite bored and didn’t really manage to connect with any of the characters.
First of all, the two main actors, namely Chloe Grace Moretz and Jamie Blackley didn’t really have much of a chemistry, at least that’s what I thought. It made it very difficult for me to root for their couple or even feel for them at all.
Second of all, I don’t know why but somehow I was led to believe that this movie would be much more about the out-of -body experience of a young girl. Instead it was more about the self-told life of a teenage girl conveyed through countless flashbacks.
The acting is okay and I’m sure that if you’re really into romantic and sentimental movies you might actually enjoy this. The ending was also very predictable and it is quite a shame for I usually like movies that stress how one single event can change somebody's entire life.
For me it was just too long and not quite what I had vouched for, even though I did enjoy some parts of the film. I'm not sure if the book it was based on written by Gayle Forman is any better or if it's just not my type of stories though.
