Memorable quotes:
May: "What's wrong with my eye mama?
May's mother: The doctor says its lazy. But we're gonna make you look perfect."
May's mother: Do you wanna make friends? Then keep it.
May's mother: I've always said: If you can't find a friend, make one.
May's mother: Suzie was the first doll I ever made. She was my best friend, and she'll be yours.
May: Don't be mad. You've been my friend my whole life. And you see me, you always have, but... I need a real friend. Someone I can hold.
May: "You have a beautiful neck.
Polly: Thank you! You should call me one of these nights. You know we'll hang out, and eat some melons or something.
May: Okay."
Dog's owner: When I left for vacation, my dog had four legs, okay? Then, I came back. Now she only has three. I looked everywhere, I can't find her leg. What do I do?
May: "I love your hands. I think they're beautiful.
Adam: I used to be a handman.
May: I could see you doing that.
Adam: Kidding, May."
Adam: "So, what do you do May?
May: I work at the animal hospital and I sew.
Adam: Okay. Animal hospital, huh?
May: Some people think it's kinda gross.
Adam: I love gross.
May: Really?
Adam: Disgust me, please."
Adam: So, I guess your job takes a lot of guts.
May: Thanks for the advice doll.
May: "You don't I'm weird?
Adam: I do think you're weird.
May: I knew that.
Adam: I like weird. I like weird a lot."
May: Nothing freaks me out.
Adam: "Who taught you to kiss?
May: Suzie..."
Polly: "Do you like pussy?
May: What?
Polly: Cats. Do you like pussy cats. Jeez, you're a nasty little thing, aren't you?"
Polly: It's girls night out tonight. You wanna come? I know, you need your beauty rest. Not much of it though.
Adam: "So, what do you think?
May: It was sweet.
Adam: Sweet?
May: I don't think that she could have gotten her whole finger in one bite though. That part was kind of far-fetched."
Adam: "May, this is weird.
May: You like weird.
Adam: Not that weird."
Polly: There are no frumpy faces allowed in this place.
Polly: "Do you feel weird doing this?
May: I am weird.
Polly: I love weird."
May: "Are you serious?
Polly: Yeah.
May: About me?
Polly: Dead."
Ambrosia: What's going on out there sweetie?
Polly: Shut up hooker!
May: I need more parts.
Adam: "What you reading about?
May: Amputation.
Adam: Is that for work?
May: No, it's just for fun."
Polly: My grandma said that it's imperfections that makes you special.
May: If you can't find a friend, make one.
Polly: I'm starting to understand what the doctor is saying 20% of the time now. It's funny because I always thought it was the doctor's writing that was incomprehensible. Maybe it's different with animals doctors.
Polly: You understand it's not serious, right? It's just a piece of ass.
Ambrosia: "I don't know what Polly sees in you.
May: Polly doesn't see anything."
Zombie cheerleader: "Sweet costume! Hey, you got any cold one is there?
May: Yes, I do."
Adam: "You should have called.
May: Would you have answered?
Adam: If I was home, yes.
May: Doesn't matter. I didn't come here to see you."
May: See me!
Plot:
When May was a child, she didn't have much friends. Her lazy eye forced her to wear an eye patch, a real put off for the other children who compared her to a pirate. In addition to her lack of social circle, May also had an overly protective and frigid mother, who just wanted her daughter to be perfect. Faced with her inability to make friends, she decided to give her a doll: after all, "if you can't find a friend, make one." Once adult, May has a job and seems fairly balanced, although a bit weird. She lives on her own, although she still has Suzie the doll for best friend.
May is desperate to get real friends though, and thinks that fixing her lazy eye will make everything better. She thus becomes disappointed and angry when people are put off by her weirdness and start turning their back on her. Resigned, May decides to do what her mother taught her: make her own "living" friend.
Review:
May certainly is a very unconventional movie. Although I knew what it was about as I had watched the trailer previous to watching this, I didn't expect what I was about to witness before my eyes...at all.
I don't even know where to start. I mean, this particular film doesn't fit into a precise genre. As the movie progresses it just jumps to one genre to another. At first, as we get to see May's childhood and controlling mother, I thought that maybe it was a drama. Then, as we see her become obsessed by Adam, I thought that maybe it was a thriller. Then, as we see her cut off body parts, I thought maybe it was a horror movie. And each time I saw Anna Faris on screen, I could have sworn it was a comedy.
Like I said, May cannot be put in a box. It's a movie on its one. It doesn't fit anywhere, which could also be an allegory for the fact that May, the main character, doesn't fit anywhere either.
The box containing May's doll, Suzie, was also a perfect allegory. Each time she heard it break, each time there was a crack appearing on the box-as though on the verge of breaking-up- she was losing her sanity even more. I thought it was really smart and I definitely enjoyed this.
I had to say that I'm used to watching movies that come across as being different. Yet, my problem with May was that I didn't find her likeable at all. I didn't feel sorry for her and I didn't buy her "frigid" mother was enough of a reason for her to behave the way she did. I did get that in the end she unleashed her anger on people who turned their back on her, but I wasn't sure why she considered Polly to be one of them. If anything, she deserved a medal to put up with May.I thus thought there was a few elements that didn't quite make sense.
Also, I feel like you should be warned that I had to take my eyes of the screen several times. Some scenes were just way too gruesome for me. So, just be warned that some scenes are not necessarily violent as per say, but really gory.
I was thus glad that Anna Faris was cast in this movie. I mean, Angela Bettis (Girls Interrupted) was perfect as May, and Jeremy Sisto (Wrong Turn, Thirteen) acted very well. Nichole Hiltz (In Plain Sight) small part was good too, but Anna Faris is purely brilliant in everything she does. In a film like May that bears lots of tension, I thought that her presence was a bowl of fresh air and my favourite scenes were definitely the ones she was in. Her character, Polly, May's lesbian co-worker, was just so funny and I more than welcomed the laughs!
Something else I really liked was the music used in this film. I thought it really helped create an atmosphere, and there were times were it seemed rather off with what was taking place on screen, which I thought really contributed to the weirdness of this movie.
Regarding the ending, I've read that some people weren't quite sure what was going on, but for me it is quite clear: May's completely lost her mind and she reached a point were she is delusional.
Well, I hope what I said will be enough for you to decide whether or not to watch this. It's definitely not a movie for everyone (especially not kids!!!!), but I thought it was well made, lyrical at times, and really interesting in a psychological point of view, although I could have done without the gore.
Just be aware that this isn't your typical Hollywood movie!
