Directed by: Drew Goddard
Memorable quotes:
Dana: "Oh my god, you hair: it's blond!
Jules: Very fabulous, non?
Dana: I can't believe you did it!
Jules: But very fabulous, right? Hurry up with the very fabulous, I'm getting insecure about it now."
Curt: You should read this: Gorovsky. This is way more interesting. Also, Bennett doesn't know by heart, so he'll think you're insightful. And you have no pants.
Curt: You know Jules, it's a week end, not an evacuation.
Jules: "I hope this is the right road, it doesn't even show up on the GPS. It is unworthy of global positioning.
Marty: That's the whole point, get off the grid, right? No cell phones reception, no traffic cameras..."
Jules: "Which war?
Creepy guy at the gas station: You know damn well which war!
Marty: Would that have been with the blue and some in grey brother, perhaps fighting against brother in that war?"
Holden: "I think we got enough gas.
Guy at the gas station: You got enough to get you there. Getting back, that's your concern."
Dana: "Thanks for being decent.
Holden: It's the least I could do since Curt and Jules sold you to me for marriage."
Marty: "You're not seeing what you don't want to see. Puppeteers.
Dana: Puppeteers?
Marty: Pop-Tarts? Did you say you had Pop-Tarts?
Dana: Marty, I love you but you're really high.
Marty: We're not who we are..."
Holden: Do I lose points if I tell I'm having a pretty nice time?
Marty: "Dana, come on!
Dana: What is this place?
Marty: Oh yeah, I had to dismember this guy with a trowel. What have you been up to?"
Marty: "How are you?
Dana: Going away.
Marty: I'm sorry.
Dana: I'm so sorry I almost shot you. I probably wouldn't have.
Marty: No, shh, I totally get it. I'm sorry I let you get attacked by a werewolf and ended the world."
Plot: Five friends decide to tale a break from their studies and go to a remote cabin in the woods, hoping for a nice time there, and completely unaware that no one gets back from it.
Review:
The Cabin in the Woods is one big mess of a movie, and I really didn't see it coming. I had decided to go watch it since I liked some of the actors, and I also knew that Joss Whedon had partly written the script. I thus thought that this would be a humorous and quite light horror film, if such a thing exists.
I was so disappointed. Once it ended, I kept looking at people to try and see if they had liked it, but it seemed to me like no one did. The only times people laughed were when the dialogues didn't make any sense. I mean, there are so many plotholes in this film, it really kept me from enjoying any of it.
I read that some people really liked it though, and thought this was original, but I couldn't disagree more. This seemed to me to be so overdone, so cliché. In fact, even the clichés are clichés. The Cabin in the Woods is just one big mix of previous films.
Now, if you like gore, blood, monsters, etc. and I guess if you're an absolute fan of Joss Whedon, I do believe you're going to enjoy this very much. If you were looking forward to be scared or see a psychological thriller, you may pass your way.
Personally, I'm still wondering whether this film was intended to be taking seriously, or if this was meant to be a parody. If it was a parody then it did a good job and I did appreciate the irony of some of the dialogues. If it was nevertheless intended to be watched as a genuine horror film, then it failed miserably.
Some of the acting wasn't brilliant as well and it was painful to watch, especially since I really wanted to see Jesse Williams, who plays Avery in the T.V. show Grey's Anatomy. I love the show and was really keen on seeing him in something else for a change. The only actors I was nonetheless glad to see were Amy Acker and Tom Lenk, who both played in Angel and Buffy, two successful Joss Whedon's T.V. shows.
I was also really disappointed in Sigourney Weaver. She used to be a great actress...
In the end I don't want to say too much about the actual plot because it would completely and utterly spoil it. If you still hesitate about whether or not you should see this, I'd see say you could still give it a try since people seem to have awfully mixed opinions anyway.
